Thinking and going green is all about cutting down on waste and being more efficient. In 50 years, 85 percent of Texas citizens may have some level of water supply shortages during a drought if the state does not conserve its existing water supplies and add new supplies. Your own efforts can make a difference!

Here are some tips to help you conserve water in your outdoor area:

Outdoor Tips

One inch of water per week in the summer will keep most Texas grasses healthy.
Don’t abuse the benefits of an automatic sprinkler system by over-watering. Set it to provide thorough but infrequent watering. Check sprinkler heads regularly to make sure they are working properly. Install rain shutoff devices and adjust sprinklers to eliminate coverage on pavement.
Prevent evaporation of water. Water lawns early in the morning or in the evening during the hotter summer months. Never water on windy days. Use drip irrigation systems for bedded plants, trees, or shrubs and use low-angle sprinklers for lawns. Cover pools and spas. This can save the equivalent of your pool volume each year!
Plant water-efficient, well-adapted, and/or native shrubs, trees, and grasses. Choose plants that are drought and heat tolerant and can survive the minimum winter temperatures in your area.
Use your water efficiently. Don’t waste water by cleaning patios or sidewalks with it; use a broom. For plants that need more water, use a hose or watering can to give them additional water.
Keep grass 3 inches tall during the summer and don’t cut more than one-third of its length at one time. Don’t scalp lawns when mowing during hot weather. Taller grass holds moisture better. Leave lawn clippings on the lawn instead of bagging.

There are several ways to eliminate water waste and to “think green” in regards to your irrigation system that will save you time and money.

One of the best ways to “Think Green” is with Drip irrigation. Drip irrigation is the most effective way to manage and care for your lawn as it uses the least amount of water. Drip irrigation is easy to install, easy to design, can be very inexpensive, and can reduce disease problems associated with high levels of moisture on some plants.

It is definitely worth the time to look into the newer irrigation models because they will surely save you a lot of time and money in the long run. This Blog is inspired by the service technicians at Texas Waterboys I serve on a daily basis. We have a good team at Texas Waterboys with over 100 years combined experience. WOW! Really, 25 YEARS!!!!

Where did all the time go? And now "A Blog"! This is a very exciting time at Texas Waterboys and I owe it all to a new team that has inspired me to work outside my comfort zone and too trust in those around me. I thank everyone for all their support for all these years and promise to always aspire to exceed your expectations! So, here's to another 25 years of sprinklers, drains and many more services (stay tuned), but "no compromise on expectations"!
